Higher Montana hunting license fees

Beginning March 1, 2026, Montana raises several hunting license fees. Resident upland A-1 is $10; resident combo AAA is $64.50, or $79.50 with the A-6 tag. Nonresident upland B-1 is $127; 3‑day B-2 is $60 for three calendar days and cannot be used for pheasant opening week or any sage grouse. Nonresident big‑game B-10 is $1,312 (limit 17,000 sold); nonresident deer B-11 is $760 (no more than 4,600 unreserved). The elk‑only combination (when you keep only the elk tag after the permit drawing) is $1,112. B‑10 and B‑11 adjust each year by the CPI‑U and round down to the nearest even dollar; elk‑only adjusts the next year only if all elk‑only licenses sell by December 1. For B‑10 and B‑11, 28.5% of each fee goes to the state account in 87‑1‑290. If only part of a B‑10 is issued after the drawing, the department may keep 10% of the B‑10 fee. Extra revenue from these adjustments goes to the state special revenue account.

More money for upland bird habitat

Beginning March 1, 2026, parts of certain license fees go straight to upland game bird work. Per license, $4.50 from A‑1 and AAA, $40 from B‑1 and B‑10, and $20 from B‑2 fund habitat and bird enhancement. Discounted licenses named in law are excluded. The department must use this money only to preserve and enhance upland game birds, and the legislature must appropriate it.
