Beginning January 1, 2026, Montana does not charge open-space levies on qualifying farm and forest property. The same property is also excluded from taxes pledged to pay principal and interest on open-space general obligation bonds. Covered property includes: qualifying agricultural land; forest land; agricultural improvements on that land; noncommercial improvements on forest land; and listed farm implements and equipment. This applies even if a levy or bond was approved before this law. It does not refund taxes for years that start before January 1, 2026. Other property taxes still apply.
