How Montana decides your voting residence

The law says your residence is your fixed home you plan to return to. It assumes your residence is where your family lives. If you live apart and plan to stay, you are a resident there. You only change residence when you move and mean to remain. These rules apply to voter registration and running for the Legislature, and they apply now.

Military and institutional residency rules

You do not gain or lose residence just because you are kept in a public institution or prison. Living on a military reservation alone does not change your residence. Being stationed in Montana or at a U.S. training camp here does not by itself create residence. Reserve members stationed outside Montana keep residency if they do not intend to change it. These rules apply now for voter registration and running for office.

Temporary moves and your Montana residency

You keep Montana residence during a short stay away if you plan to return and do not vote elsewhere. Coming for temporary work, training, or school does not make you a resident without plans to stay after. If you move to another state intending to make it home, you lose Montana residence. These rules apply now for voting and candidacy.
