ITM transfers get same protections

Transfers you start at an ITM are covered by the state's electronic funds transfer rules. The law also treats ITMs as electronic terminals, like ATMs and point‑of‑sale devices. You get the same protections when using an ITM as you do at other terminals. Payments by paper checks at a terminal are still not covered.

Banks can add ITMs without branches

The law defines an interactive teller machine (ITM). An ITM is an unstaffed bank device that can start a live session with remote bank staff. Customers can do core banking at the machine without staff and can start or end the session themselves. Qualifying ITMs do not count as bank branches. This makes it easier for banks to place more ITMs.

Different rules for on-site and off-site ITMs

An ITM located away from a bank’s building is a satellite terminal. Satellite-terminal rules apply to that off-site machine. An ITM on the bank’s premises is not a satellite terminal. Those satellite rules do not apply to on-site ITMs.
