Bison loss payments for Montana ranchers

Beginning July 1, 2025, Montana reimburses livestock producers for domestic bison losses caused by wolves, mountain lions, or grizzly bears. Other covered animals are cattle, swine, horses, mules, sheep, goats, llamas, and livestock guard dogs. Losses on state, federal, tribal, and private land are eligible. Payments for confirmed or probable losses are up to fair market value; for bison and other livestock, that means the average price at the most recent public auction for that animal or a board-set replacement price. Before payment, the Department of Revenue must certify per capita livestock fees are paid; delinquent fees must be paid first, except for tribal members or authorized tribal entities.
