Faster veto notice and special session option

When the Legislature is not in session, the Governor must return any vetoed bill to the Secretary of State with written reasons. If the bill did not receive two-thirds support, the Secretary of State mails the bill title and veto message to every legislator within 5 working days of getting them. The Legislature may reconvene to reconsider a vetoed bill using the special-session process.

Legislators' veto votes posted daily

The Secretary of State must poll legislators on veto overrides when a bill already passed with two-thirds support. Within 5 working days, the office sends a certified-mail packet with the bill, veto message, a ballot, and a return-by date. The return date must be within 30 days of sending. Lawmakers may return ballots in person, by regular mail, or by fax. Starting within 15 days of sending, the office posts a daily tally online with who voted and how. The final tally happens within 1 working day after the return date. If two-thirds of each house vote to override, the bill becomes law.
