Study plan, funding, updates, and report

Before the new census data are available, veterans' division staff present a study plan and budget to the State Administration and Veterans' Affairs Interim Committee. After seeing the plan, the committee may request a bill with money to fund the study. While the study runs, the veterans' division gives at least one update, and more if asked. After the study ends, Public Health and Human Services and the veterans' division write a detailed report with results and recommendations and present it to the committee.

What the veterans care study covers

The study counts veterans by county and age. It lists needed long-term care, like nursing, domiciliary, Alzheimer's, community, and in-home care. It must survey veterans online or on paper and run focus groups. It works with veterans groups, caregivers, lawmakers, and local partners. The agency may form an advisory committee to help. It reviews current veterans' home services and checks if more state veterans' cemeteries are needed and where. Before work starts, the agency prepares an outreach and marketing plan.

Who runs the veterans care study

When new federal census data arrive, the state starts a decennial study of veterans' long-term care needs. The Montana Veterans' Affairs Division has primary responsibility for the study. The law also sets roles for Public Health and Human Services staff to carry out the work with the veterans' division.
