Dentists must get an anesthesia permit to give deep, general, or moderate sedation. The dental board inspects each facility before approval and at least every five years. You get at least 30 days’ notice and the inspector’s name for the first visit. The board charges application, renewal, and inspection fees that match its costs. A temporary permit can allow up to 120 days of practice while the inspection is pending.
The board sets training, continuing education, and experience rules for giving sedation. Rules cover deep, general, moderate, and minimal sedation. Facilities with permits must keep required equipment, supplies, and drugs; standards may also cover nitrous oxide or oxygen with one oral sedative. The law defines each sedation level and says giving anesthesia during dental work counts as practicing dentistry, unless another law limits it.
