Montana disability savings follow federal rules

Montana now uses the federal 529A rules for disability savings (ABLE) accounts. The annual contribution limit matches the federal limit, and qualified disability expenses define tax-free withdrawals. Rollovers between family members’ ABLE accounts, and from other states’ plans, follow federal rules. A parent, legal guardian, or agent can act for the beneficiary when needed. These rules apply to Montana income tax years that begin after December 31, 2024.
