State workers face tighter vehicle commuting rules

The law bans using a state-owned vehicle to commute between home and work. It applies to all state agencies, including the university system. A director can allow it only if your one-way trip is under 30 miles, your job requires quick on-call emergency response listed in your position, and the position has frequently responded to emergencies in the last 6 months. Some roles are exempt: the Corrections psychiatrist at Montana State Prison; when the vehicle is your worksite; elected or appointed officials with 24-hour use set in law as part of pay; and Division of Criminal Investigation fire marshals and certain agents subject to call-outs. Commuting over 30 miles is barred unless your department director authorizes it under agency rules. Any approval must be in a signed memo kept on file, with a copy to the Governor. The law takes effect upon passage and approval.
