New help after jail or prison

Montana creates an Office of Reentry Services in the Department of Labor and Industry. It helps people leaving or preparing to leave jail or prison. Services include job training and placement, education and certificates, and entrepreneurship coaching. It also offers transition planning, housing help, transportation and food support, and links to substance use and mental health care. The law takes effect on passage and approval.

Agencies must coordinate reentry support

The Office of Reentry Services must coordinate programs with the Departments of Commerce, Corrections, Justice, Public Health and Human Services, Higher Education, and Public Instruction. It must consult the state workforce innovation board. The office must also do outreach to businesses, mental health and substance use providers, criminal justice advocates, and affordable and transitional housing groups. This aligns help for people returning to their communities.

Regular reports on reentry services

By July 1 before each legislative session, the Department of Labor and Industry must report to the Legislative Finance Committee and the Law and Justice Interim Committee. The report describes services the office provided over the last two years, the cost of those services, and how many people were served.
