Farm vehicles must use turnouts

If you drive a farm vehicle and cars build up behind you, you must turn off at the nearest safe turnout. If the right shoulder is wide and safe, you may use it until other vehicles pass. These rules improve traffic flow and safety.

Slow down near farm equipment

The law requires drivers to slow down near farm equipment on highways. When you come up behind a farm vehicle, you must slow to its speed. You may pass only where it is allowed and safe. When a farm vehicle is coming the other way, you must slow to half the posted speed. On multi-lane roads, move out of the lane next to the center line when it is safe.

Which farm vehicles are covered

The law defines "agricultural vehicle." It includes farm tractors and implements of husbandry. It also includes self-propelled farm machines, tractors with towed farm units, and vehicles hauling hay or straw. These are the vehicles covered by the slow-down and turnout rules.
