New training rules for public safety officers

Appointing authorities must ensure public safety officers finish the council’s required training within 1 year of hire. Officers who do not finish must be terminated. If an officer returns after more than 3 years and less than 5, they must complete the basic course within 1 year of reappointment. This applies only when no equivalency course exists and the officer previously took the basic course. Reserve officers are exempt from that basic-course rule. An appointing authority can request up to a 180-day extension from the council, applying on the officer’s behalf and explaining why more time is needed.
