Licensing boards and coroners can get medical records

The law lets health care providers share medical records in specific investigations. A licensing board can get records with an administrative subpoena during an investigation or discipline case. A coroner can get a deceased person’s records for a death investigation under state law. These are exceptions to the usual privacy rules. Sharing is not allowed when another law prohibits disclosure.
