Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 1 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Plate donations fund safety training grants

Starting January 1, 2026, the $20 donation from each special plate goes into a state account. The Department of Transportation uses this money for grants to Montana nonprofits that teach motorcycle safety and awareness. The account is automatically appropriated, so DOT can spend the donated money for these grants. DOT sets the rules for which Montana-based nonprofits qualify.

New motorcycle safety plates for riders

Beginning January 1, 2026, you can choose a new black special plate for your Montana motorcycle or quadricycle. You must be a Montana resident, and the vehicle must be titled and registered in the state. You pay a one-time $30 at issuance: $5 county administrative fee, $5 license plate fee, and a $20 donation. The county keeps $5, and the state deposits $5 in the general fund and $20 in a special account for safety grants. The plate design recognizes Montana nonprofits that promote rider safety and awareness.
