Health department watchdog can subpoena records

Beginning July 1, 2025, the state health department’s Office of Inspector General can issue subpoenas in waste, fraud, or abuse investigations for health care and public assistance programs it runs. Subpoenas can require financial records, documents, and electronic data. Each subpoena must be signed by both the department director and the inspector general. People and businesses named in a subpoena must provide the records. The state provides $5,000 from the general fund for the two-year period starting July 1, 2025 to carry this out.
