New rules for nonresident shed hunting

Nonresidents can buy a Class F license for $50 to shed hunt on wildlife management areas. Montana residents get access 7 days earlier than nonresidents. Breaking the rules brings rising penalties: first a warning; second a misdemeanor and up to $100 fine with possible loss of license; third a misdemeanor and up to $500 fine and loss of license and privileges, upon conviction or forfeiture of bond or bail. The law defines shed hunting as picking up naturally shed elk, deer, or antelope antlers or horns, and skull‑attached horns from animals that died naturally; mountain sheep are covered by separate law.

Conservation license required with ID checks

You must buy a conservation license before you buy or apply for hunting, fishing, trapping, or nonresident WMA shed‑hunting licenses. You also need one to use department lands or to recreate on state trust lands under agreement, with limited exceptions in law. A resident conservation license costs $8. A nonresident license costs $10. Each price includes a $0.25 search‑and‑rescue donation you can decline in writing. Your application must list your name, age, home and mailing address, how long you have lived in Montana, and whether you are a U.S. citizen or an alien. You must show a Montana driver license, examiner ID, tribal ID, or other department ID. You no longer give the last four digits of your Social Security number, except in a narrow case set by law.
