Homeowners get new wind turbine limits

Beginning January 1, 2026, tall wind turbines face new rules near homes. A turbine 500 feet or taller cannot be built closer than 1,500 feet to an occupied home that is under a wind energy agreement with the turbine owner, unless that property owner agrees to a shorter distance. Height is measured from ground level at the base to the tip of the blade. For new turbines 500 feet or taller in high‑ice areas (ice class 4+), if they are within 1,500 feet of an occupied home, operators must use commercially reasonable efforts to cut icing risk during operator‑controlled deicing, and blade speed is capped at 10% of top speed unless the property owner approves a higher speed.
