Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

2 provisions identified: 0 benefits, 0 costs, 2 mixed.

Commerce provides admin support and billing

Beginning July 1, 2025, the commission is attached to the Department of Commerce for administrative purposes. Each year, the commission and department set an indirect administrative rate and report it to the Economic Affairs Interim Committee. The department provides needed staff and services under the state pay plan and bills the commission for reasonable costs. The commission may also hire an executive director, a curator, and other staff and set their duties and pay.

New rules for commission seats

The law reduces the commission from 14 to 9 members starting July 1, 2025, as terms end. The senate president and house speaker now have 2 months to fill their seats. If they do not act, the governor appoints. Most governor appointees serve 3-year terms; legislative or fallback appointees serve 2-year terms. Appointing officials must favor people with tourism, planning, historic preservation, and business experience. One member is a Montana historian, one is from the tourism council, and two are from the public.
