State council to oversee criminal justice

The law creates a statewide council to monitor Montana’s criminal justice system and study problems. It sets data priorities for the justice data warehouse and advises on policy and operations. The council can request legislation and must send reports to the Governor and Legislature. It must give updates to two legislative committees when asked. Courts and key agencies must share data and help the council. The Legislative Services Division provides staff support. The law takes effect on passage and approval.

Who serves on the justice council

The council has 18 members, including legislators, judges, agency heads, a sheriff, a county attorney, and several Governor appointees (tribal, parole board, victims, civil rights, and community corrections). The presiding officer must be a legislator. The Governor and Attorney General must consider people who also serve on the Board of Crime Control when appointing. Vacancies are filled by the original authority; after 60 days, the council may name a temporary member. Members get travel reimbursement; full-time public employees keep regular pay; legislators get their usual legislative pay.
