Schools stock epinephrine and train staff

Schools may keep epinephrine auto-injectors or nasal spray for emergencies. A nurse or trained staff member can give it in good faith under the school’s written plan. The plan must cover staff training, where the medicine is kept, and follow-up steps like calling 9-1-1. Each device must be prescribed to the school, filled by a licensed pharmacy, and stored in a secure but easy-to-reach place. Parents must be told the school stocks epinephrine and can ask for the plan. The law limits lawsuits against the school and staff unless there is gross negligence, willful or wanton misconduct, or intentional harm.

Students can carry epinephrine, including nasal spray

Schools must let students with asthma, severe allergies, or anaphylaxis carry and self-use their prescribed medicine. This includes inhalers, epinephrine auto-injectors, and epinephrine nasal spray. Parents must give written permission, a prescriber’s note with dose and when to use, proof the student can self-use, and a written treatment plan. After using epinephrine at school, the student must report to the nurse or another adult, who must provide follow-up and call 9-1-1 if needed. Youth correctional facilities are exempt and set their own rules.
