Some apartments can use one stairway

The law lets some apartment buildings use only one inside stairway for exits. Local building officials can approve this design. It applies to Group R-2 buildings that are six stories or fewer and have no more than four units on any floor. The building must have an automatic sprinkler system. Each unit must have at least one window or another emergency exit. Builders may save space and cost, while residents have fewer exit choices.
