The law creates an interstate commission to run the compact. Each member state has one delegate. The commission can make rules, hire staff, and collect fees. Member states must license massage therapy, use a national exam, run FBI checks, require continuing competence, join the data system, and share discipline reports. The compact starts when at least seven states enact it. States can leave, but withdrawal takes effect after 180 days, and licenses stay recognized for at least 180 days after notice. The commission helps resolve disputes and can take action in court when a state is in default.
Your home state controls your multistate license. If it suspends or revokes it, your OK to practice in all member states stops until fixed. Remote states can limit your practice in their borders and issue orders. Joining an alternative program pauses your multistate license while you participate. States share discipline and investigation data in a shared database. You get a unique ID, and expunged records are removed.
Montana joins the Interstate Massage Compact. The compact takes effect once at least seven states have enacted it. You can get a multistate license if you hold an active home-state license, have at least 625 education hours, and pass the national exam. You must give fingerprints for state and FBI checks and pay required fees. Disqualifiers include felony convictions within 5 years, certain practice-related misdemeanors within 2 years, some serious crimes, and recent license revocations or surrenders. Your multistate license renews with your home-state license. Active-duty service members and spouses can keep one home state while serving.
