Bill Overview

Analyzed Economic Effects

3 provisions identified: 2 benefits, 0 costs, 1 mixed.

Longevity pay for sheriff staff

Undersheriffs, deputy sheriffs, and detention officers now get longevity pay. Starting on your first work anniversary, you earn 1% of the office’s minimum base annual salary for each year you have served. The county pays it in equal monthly amounts. This does not apply if a negotiated agreement already gives you longevity pay. Changes to any discretionary salary do not change this longevity amount.

Sheriff pay rules control in conflicts

When another law conflicts with the sheriff pay and longevity sections (7-4-2508 to 7-4-2510), those sections control. This applies to undersheriffs, deputy sheriffs, and detention officers who work for a county sheriff’s office.

Unfunded mandate limits set aside

This law overrides Montana’s unfunded mandate rules (1-2-112 through 1-2-116) for this act. Counties must carry out the new longevity pay even without extra state funding. This can add local budget costs. The act itself does not set dollar amounts or provide funding.
