New tax rules for nonprofit shooting ranges

Beginning Jan 1, 2026, shooting ranges that are not exempt and are run by a 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) nonprofit incorporated under Montana’s nonprofit law are class four commercial and industrial property. They pay half the commercial rate: 0.945% of market value. A “shooting range” is buildings, improvements, and up to 150 acres needed for safe gun use; it does not include a home, the acre under a home, other business land, or non‑integral improvements. This reclassification can raise some tax bills, but the half‑rate lowers taxes compared with the standard commercial rate.
