Montana bans driving a motor vehicle if the exhaust is louder than 95 decibels, measured by SAE J1169 (May 1998). The rule uses that specific test to decide if your vehicle is too loud. It does not apply to motorcycles or quadricycles that are subject to 61-9-418. If you are charged, you cannot be convicted if you had reasonable grounds to believe the vehicle met the 95 dB limit.
