The law sets clear steps after an officer-involved shooting. Investigators must take the officer’s weapon, photograph it, and send it to the state crime lab. The lab test-fires the gun, collects cartridge cases and ammunition, and records its unique features. Once the investigation ends and no appeals or criminal charges are pending or contemplated, the weapon must be returned within 7 days to the agency it came from for redeployment. This also applies to weapons collected in a coroner’s inquest.
