Annual state-tribal meetings and reports

Beginning July 1, 2025, the governor holds a yearly working meeting in Helena with state agency leaders and tribal officials to discuss issues that affect tribal governments and people and to seek solutions. By August 15 each year, every state agency sends the governor a report on the prior fiscal year. The report lists any rule or policy changes from these talks, how the agency finds actions that affect tribes, efforts to build government-to-government communication, and efforts to consult tribes and use American Indian data in programs that directly affect tribes. By September or October 15 each year, as stated in the law, the governor gives each tribal government a report that reviews state and tribal activities and describes the required training. The secretary of state also sends a copy of this law to every federally recognized tribal government in Montana.

Tribal-relations training for staff and legislators

Beginning July 1, 2025, the state director of Indian affairs provides training materials to all legislators on Indian law, federal Indian policy history, and tribal members’ legal rights. Materials include updated tribal relations handbooks, notices of Governor’s Office training, and links to Indian Education for All resources. The Governor’s Office and a trainer chosen by tribal governments run at least one annual training for state agency managers and key staff who work with tribes, in Helena or another agreed site. The director and legislative services make sure legislators are told about this training and are invited to join.
