State sets suicide training standards

Beginning July 1, 2025, the Office of Public Instruction approves and reviews all school suicide prevention training materials. OPI gives schools guidance and technical help and works with the health department to ensure low-cost or no-cost options. School trustees must adopt suicide prevention and response policies that describe the staff training rules in the law.

Limits on school suicide training lawsuits

Beginning July 1, 2025, people cannot bring a lawsuit for losses from actions or omissions tied to this section or related training or lack of training. The law also does not create a specific legal duty of care.

Free suicide training for school staff

Beginning July 1, 2025, schools make youth suicide prevention training available each year to every employee and to OPI staff who work with students. The training is free for the employee. Covered employees must complete at least 1 hour every 3 years. Schools can offer in-person, videoconference, online self-study, or other board-approved methods that meet state professional development standards.
