Montana now sets clear steps to change a statute’s end (sunset) date. Lawmakers can revise the date by amending the original session law, and they can do this any number of times. If two bills in the same session set different end dates, a coordination instruction can resolve it; if not, the latest end date wins and earlier ones are void. A change does not take effect unless the revising bill is effective before the later of the original or the new end date. Coordinated updates to the original and prior revising session laws in the same enactment remain valid. The law takes effect on passage and approval and applies retroactively to laws passed and approved on or after the start of the 69th legislative session.
