Lawful presence check for noncitizen IDs

Beginning January 1, 2026, noncitizens who apply for a Montana ID must be lawfully present. The state checks status using the federal SAVE system or another approved check. If you are not lawfully present, you cannot get the ID. This applies to IDs issued on or after that date.

U.S. citizens' IDs show an eagle

Beginning January 1, 2026, Montana driver licenses and state IDs issued to U.S. citizens display an eagle image. The eagle shows the holder is a U.S. citizen. The mark is required on cards issued on or after that date. It does not change fees or give extra benefits.
