Fewer testing barriers for future teachers

Beginning January 1, 2025, New Jersey’s State Board of Education cannot require basic-skills tests for most instructional certificates. This change excludes the limited certificate of eligibility and the limited certificate of eligibility with advanced standing. Covered tests measure reading, writing, and math and include the Praxis Core. The board also cannot require state-approved teacher-preparation programs to use these tests for admission, with no exception stated. The law requires the board to adopt rules to carry out these changes.

Alternative teacher certification pathway ends

Effective June 28, 2024, New Jersey repealed the law establishing the alternative certificate of eligibility. The repeal ends that statutory pathway for teachers and prospective teachers.
