Human composting operators pay annual fees

Beginning July 1, 2026, human composting facility operators and regular users of another operator’s facility must register annually. They pay the State Board of Mortuary Science $25 per facility each year. Certificates cover January 1 through December 31 of the year issued and must be displayed inside the facility. Facilities cannot operate without registration or at a location not listed on the certificate. The law does not specify whether providers pass this fee on to families.

Families gain human composting with safeguards

Beginning July 1, 2026, New Jersey allows natural organic reduction, which turns human remains into a soil-like product. Facilities must occupy secure space within or on registered mortuary property. They need state environmental inspection and approval before opening, plus immediate, personal supervision by a licensed funeral director or mortuary practitioner. Construction, upkeep, and each process must meet state rules. Sites for the resulting remains must be at least 200 days’ groundwater travel time or 500 feet from drinking-water wells. Funeral directors must give customers written notice of cemetery placement options when making disposition arrangements. The Cemetery Board maintains the list of cemeteries that express interest and meet its rules.
