New Jersey Historic Trust changes oversight

Beginning December 19, 2025, the New Jersey Historic Trust moves from the Department of State to Community Affairs. Staff, funding, records, and property move with it, while existing rules and decisions stay in place. Its 15-member board includes three state officials and 12 citizen trustees appointed by the governor with Senate approval. Citizen trustees represent different regions and need five years of relevant experience; current trustees can finish their terms without meeting that requirement. The Trust can transfer money or property to Community Affairs or Environmental Protection for running and maintaining state historic sites programs. The law sets no funding amount and creates no direct household payment.
