More respite care for New Jersey families

Beginning June 28, 2024, the law sets a maximum of 90 respite care hours per eligible child over 90 days. Children must qualify for services funded through New Jersey’s Department of Children and Families, Division of the Children’s System of Care. Respite care gives caregivers temporary relief, during emergencies or from time to time, with hourly or daily care. Care can come from an agency-hired worker, a family-hired worker, or a volunteer, within the commissioner’s service and cost limits. The commissioner must use available state and federal funds and adopt rules to carry out the law; no separate funding amount is specified.
