More emergency care for diabetes patients

Beginning July 1, 2026, New Jersey basic-life-support emergency medical technicians can independently give glucagon and test blood sugar after state approval. Glucagon treats severe low blood sugar in people with diabetes. The health commissioner sets approval standards, which may include training, and must allow at least auto-injector use. Approved technicians must follow rules for using, maintaining, and disposing of glucagon devices. The commissioner can change, suspend, or end an individual technician’s approval to protect public health, safety, or welfare. The commissioner can also require hospital transfer, but patients or their legally authorized representatives can refuse. The law itself does not require every patient to be transferred. The commissioner can keep a registry with names, residences, and approval dates, and publish an annual list of approved technicians.

Possible training fees for emergency technicians

Beginning July 1, 2026, approved New Jersey emergency medical technician training providers can charge enrolled students for specified training and certification tests. This covers blood sugar testing and emergency glucagon training. Providers can charge only when the Emergency Medical Technician Training Fund does not reimburse those costs. The law sets no fee amount.
