More free legal help for colonia communities

Beginning July 1, 2025, the University of New Mexico has broader authority to contract for free community-governance legal help. With Community Governance Attorney Commission approval, contracts can cover counties or cities containing a designated colonia, state agencies, and eligible nonprofits. Services address colonia governance issues for low-income colonia residents, acequias, and land grants-mercedes. Contracts use the legal services fund, with no specific dollar amount stated, and can pay for no more than half of a full-time attorney position. Providers must secure enough matching money to fund the full-time position.
