More assessment options for new teachers

Applicants for a standard New Mexico level one teaching license can pass either the state teacher assessments or teacher portfolio. For elementary licenses, the portfolio must rigorously test knowledge of the science of teaching reading, beginning January 1, 2013. Applicants must be at least 18 and hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited school. They must complete an approved teacher-preparation program, clear a background check, and meet the remaining level one license qualifications.

New Mexico licenses for out-of-state support staff

Instructional support providers licensed in another state can qualify for a New Mexico level two or level three license. They must have professional experience and hold a separate professional license when required. They must show the required skills, meet the qualifications for the license sought, and clear a background check. A local superintendent can require mentorship. Providers who do not qualify for the higher level can apply for a lower-level license.
