New Mexico educator retirees receiving Option B or C payments with a spouse beneficiary gain a one-time choice they cannot undo. They can name another beneficiary or remove the survivor-benefit reduction from future payments. Naming someone else costs $100, keeps the same payment form, and requires recalculating payments to preserve their expected lifetime value. If still married, the named spouse must give notarized written consent to give up beneficiary status. After divorce, retirees can choose unreduced Option A payments or another beneficiary, subject to the applicable court order.
