Braiders and eyebrow threaders need no license

Beginning July 1, 2025, hair braiders and eyebrow threaders in New Mexico need no state barber and cosmetology board license. Hair braiding includes twisting, wrapping, weaving, extending, locking, or braiding hair. It also covers incidental use of topical products, mechanical tools, extensions, fibers, beads, and other accessories. The board cannot discipline people for braiding hair without a license. It also cannot deny barbering, cosmetology, or hairstyling licenses because applicants braided hair without those licenses before July 1, 2025. Other requirements for those licenses still apply.
