Sawmill graders face possible certificate fees

New Mexico’s Forestry Division may charge up to $250 to issue a timber-grading certificate. This fee applies to sawmill owners and employees seeking the certificate. The law does not require a fee, so the Division can charge less or nothing.

Sawmills gain grading rights and duties

New Mexico’s Forestry Division must offer a timber-grading certificate program for sawmill owners and employees. Those who complete it receive certificates that expire after five years. State grading and labeling rules must follow the American Lumber Standard Committee’s system. Certified graders may only grade and label timber processed at a sawmill they own or operate. They must give purchasers labels listing the grader, sawmill name and location, timber species, quantity, type, and intended use location. Labels must also list harvest or processing dates, grading dates, and moisture content at grading. Covered timber includes lumber, structural beams, and vigas milled in New Mexico. State-graded and certified timber is allowed in all residential and commercial buildings in New Mexico. End users must give building inspectors the labels, which replace grade stamps and carry the same grading status as accredited-agency stamps. The Division can suspend or revoke certificates for good cause, with notice, a hearing opportunity, and appeal rights.
