Low demand ends special plate access

Starting July 1, 2028, the Motor Vehicle Division reviews Look Twice plate demand every July 1. It checks motor vehicle and motorcycle plates separately, counting new plates and renewals from the previous fiscal year. It compares each total with that category’s average for fiscal years 2026 and 2027. If the total falls below 50% of that average, the Division must stop issuing that category’s plates by September 1.

Drivers get awareness plates with extra fees

Beginning July 1, 2025, New Mexico vehicle and motorcycle owners can request special plates reminding drivers to look twice for motorcycles. Motor vehicle owners pay $45 initially and $15 each year to renew, in addition to regular registration fees. Motorcycle owners pay $40 initially and $10 each year to renew, in addition to regular registration fees. The Motor Vehicle Division keeps $12 from each initial motor vehicle fee and $8 from each initial motorcycle fee. The remaining $33 or $32, plus all renewal fees, fund statewide driver-awareness education and motorcycle training through the Department of Transportation’s Motorcycle Training Fund.
