Public Records Task Force structure and timeline

The law creates a 10‑member Public Records Task Force from July 1, 2025, to June 30, 2027. Seats are split 5 government representatives and 5 transparency advocates. Senate and Assembly leaders and the Governor make the appointments named in the law. The Task Force elects a Chair from the advocates and a Vice Chair from the government representatives at its first meeting. It meets at least four times; the Chair or a majority can call meetings. A majority of members is a quorum, and a majority of those present can act. It may apply for and accept gifts and grants to support its work. All members must be appointed by October 31, 2025. The law defines who counts as a government representative or a transparency advocate using listed agencies and groups.

Task Force to review public records rules

The Task Force evaluates Nevada’s public-records system. It reviews exemptions, review‑board policies, broad requests, redaction workload, costs to requesters, dispute options like mediation, and data tracking. It must recommend who controls records, when to grant or deny access, and how to protect sensitive data and criminal investigations. It also recommends penalties for late or incomplete responses, a standard fee schedule, and ways to curb retaliatory lawsuits. By October 31, 2026, it sends a written report with its work and recommendations to the Legislative Counsel Bureau for the 84th Session.

Unpaid service, public employees keep pay

Members serve without pay. If you are a state or local officer or employee on the Task Force, your employer must let you attend and keep your regular pay. Your employer cannot make you use vacation, comp time, or make up the time for Task Force work.
