New sign and fines for animal-contact businesses

If you sell public access to interact with live animals, you must post a sign. The sign must be at least 8 1/2 by 11 inches and placed where people pay. It must say to call the local animal control authority and list its phone number if an animal is in danger or abused. You pay a $100 administrative penalty for each day the required sign is missing. Facilities accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums do not have to post the sign.

Safer reporting of animal cruelty

If you think an animal was abused, you can report it. You can contact a peace officer, animal control, or an authorized animal-welfare officer. Agencies and others cannot willfully reveal your name, except for a criminal investigation or prosecution. The law defines “animal control authority” to include city or county animal control, police, and qualified animal-welfare groups.
