Stronger enforcement of hospice rules

Beginning January 1, 2026, the state health division can deny, suspend, or revoke a facility’s license if it breaks the hospice patient-rights rules in this law. This strengthens oversight to protect patients.

Stronger rights for hospice patients

Beginning January 1, 2026, hospice programs must get your informed written consent for treatment and keep it 5 years after care ends. They must tell you if they file benefit claims for you. They must give you written contact information and the hours they are available. If they plan to end your care or close, they must give at least 7 days’ written notice. At admission, they must give a written notice of your right to file a complaint with the state and how to do it. Within 15 days after you choose hospice, they must explain in writing the services they offer and your rights. You have the right to needed medical, nursing, psychological, pastoral, and social services under state law. Medical and dependent-care facilities must also tell patients about these hospice rights at admission.
