Service credit rules for school and higher-ed staff

Beginning July 1, 2025, school‑district staff who work less than 12 months and higher‑ed professional staff on academic‑year contracts have new service‑credit rules. A full year of credit is given for at least 900 hours worked over at least 8 calendar months in the school year. If you work under 900 hours but at least 8 months, you get one and one‑third days of credit for each day worked, posted only after the period ends. A full year of credit is not posted until the 12‑month period ends. If a new contract overlaps the old 12‑month period, the district must certify the overlap and that credit is granted at the first later lapse in service. School staff are measured by the school year; higher‑ed staff are measured by the fiscal year. While on sabbatical, you get full credit if your employer certifies pay and contributions equal full‑time; otherwise credit is prorated by your pay versus prior pay. No member gets less credit than what the old law allowed when the time was earned.

Time that does not count toward PERS

Starting July 1, 2025, some time does not count toward Nevada PERS service credit. No credit is given for unpaid leave (unless another law allows it), overtime, or work in a job that does not qualify for PERS. You cannot receive more than one day in a day, one month in a month, or more than one year in any 12‑month period (except under the school‑year rules). Time with no pay does not count unless the chapter specifically allows it.
