Medicaid pays more for epilepsy devices

Medicaid pays at least 82% of the purchase cost for a vagus nerve stimulation device prescribed for epilepsy, and for any replacement part. This payment is separate from what Medicaid pays for surgery or clinic work to implant, repair, or replace the device. The state must ask U.S. Health and Human Services for these rates by October 1, 2025, using accepted methods. The rule takes effect March 1, 2026.

Funds to implement Medicaid device payments

Starting July 1, 2025, the state provides $54,728 for FY 2025-2026 and $240,004 for FY 2026-2027 to the Medicaid agency to carry out the law and upgrade computer systems. Any unspent money must return to the State General Fund by September 18, 2026 and September 17, 2027. The agency is also authorized to spend $188,270 (FY 2025-2026) and $700,098 (FY 2026-2027) from non–State General Fund and non–Highway Fund sources for the same work.
