Call 9-8-8 for crisis help

The state supports a crisis hotline you reach by dialing 9-8-8. It runs at least one support center to answer calls and coordinate help. The Division encourages and, when money is available, sets up mobile crisis teams for de-escalation and stabilization. It supports crisis stabilization care at hospitals that hold a crisis stabilization endorsement. It also adopts rules for responder qualifications and secure information sharing so care is coordinated.

Who responds on mobile crisis teams

Mobile crisis teams must include at least one behavioral health professional. Teams must also include one or more of these: law enforcement officers, emergency medical service providers, or behavioral health peers and similar staff, such as community health workers, case managers, or peer recovery supporters. This sets clear standards for who shows up to help.

Phone carriers get 9-8-8 liability shield

Phone and network providers, and their workers and contractors, are not liable for damages from installing, maintaining, or providing 9-8-8 service. This includes failures to send a call to a support center. They can be liable if a court finds willful conduct or gross negligence.
