Guard deputy eligibility and rank limits

Beginning July 1, 2025, only Nevada National Guard officers who are federally recognized at colonel or higher and have at least 4 years as a federally recognized Nevada Guard officer can be named Deputy or Assistant Adjutant General. Appointments must be at least colonel and cannot exceed brigadier general. The Governor may promote a Deputy or Assistant up to brigadier general. They serve at the pleasure of the Adjutant General, or until resignation, loss of federal recognition, or removal for cause by court‑martial.

New Guard deputy and acting rules

Beginning July 1, 2025, the Governor’s military staff includes the Adjutant General, a new Deputy Adjutant General, and two Assistant Adjutants General. The Adjutant General may appoint the Deputy from the Army or Air Guard and two Assistants, one from each branch. The Deputy and Assistants do the duties the Adjutant General assigns. If the Adjutant General is absent, the Deputy acts; if not available, an Assistant acts; if none are available, another Guard officer acts. The acting officer keeps their authorized salary while serving. The Deputy is in unclassified state service and, unless NRS 284.143 allows it, cannot hold another paid government office.
