Students can earn credit outdoors

Starting July 1, 2025, students in junior high, middle, or high school can earn elective credit for approved outdoor activities. The activity must be board- or charter-approved, done outside school hours, and take significant time outdoors. It must teach outdoor skills. Examples include identifying Nevada plants and animals, trail building, habitat restoration, survival, hiking, archery, and bird watching. These credits count only toward elective requirements. If approved locally, the board sets a credit cap, an application process, and requires parent or guardian consent. Schools do not have to offer or pay for these activities, so families may need outside options.
